Carnival is well embedded in the Maltese culture. The word carnival has its roots in Maltese tradition that pertain to 'carnivore' and implying 'meat-eaters' or 'meat-lovers'.

Historically the carnival was initiated by the knights of Malta in the 15th century. It was organised before lent, the fasting period ahead of the Easter celebrations.
